Write & Walk Retreat at Sunrise Beach in Fort Worden (11/24)
Writers, nature lovers and beach walkers! Join us on Friday, November 24th for a fun and introspective walk & write retreat the day after Thanksgiving. Great for out-of-town visitors too!
Fort Worden’s vast variety of terrain offers many great beach walks, but there’s only one that holds my heart. Due to its southeast-facing direction, I call it Sunrise Beach.

I first discovered this beach one early morning when I was drawn to a staircase overlook (known to locals as The Steps) at the southeastern end of Fort Worden.
Gazing out at the sunrise, I was admiring the pristine beauty of the beach when a woman walked by and asked, “Are you going swimming?”
I readily assured her that I was not, wondering why on earth she’d asked that. But when I saw a few folks walking up the staircase from the beach below — all bundled up, hair wet, towels in hand — it suddenly became clear.
I asked them if they had indeed gone swimming.
“Every morning!” one said, and they all nodded.
“Nothing beats it,” said another.
“You feel simply amazing all day afterwards!” the third chimed in.
Thus I discovered the wonders of this place, as well as the glories of winter swimming…but that’s for another post. (Don’t worry, this retreat will not involve swimming…though you’re welcome to go afterwards!)
Retreat Details
The walk itself is a delightful, easy stroll, starting at the beach below the Marine Science Center wharf and heading south along the eastern shore. And this retreat will have it all! Not only will there be a beautiful beach, there will also be some goofy ice-breakers, group sharing and solo walking, journaling and introspection time to deepen our connection to our creative selves while communing with the natural world.
Good for almost all mobility levels, this walk is very mellow and can involve as much or as little actual walking as you’d like.
